The objective of the Board is to identify, monitor and analyze trends in the life sciences, including anticipating expected areas and barriers for new discoveries which may be overcome by new imaging/microscopic/light optics/spectroscopic measurement technologies.

The Board will also focus on light optics technologies and their usage and market potential. One ultimate task is to create a Czech cluster for light/photon microscopy-based value-added solutions for research in life sciences. Additionally, this hub should facilitate effective cooperation among private companies and the academic sphere and subsequently support technology transfer.

prof. RNDr. Radim Chmelík, Ph.D.

Radim Chmelík is the inventor of the Q-Phase quantitative phase microscope, which, thanks to patented technology from Telight and the University of Brno, allows scientists to explore new frontiers of cell biology. He graduated from the Department of Science at J.E. Purkyně University and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Brno University of Technology. Professor Chmelík has long been involved in research and invention with a focus on quantitative phase imaging.

Ing. Miroslav Herden

Miroslav Herden graduated from the University of Chemical Technology in Prague and worked as a researcher for Beiersdorf in Germany. As part of his entrepreneurial activities, he founded the SynLab network of biomedical laboratories and later the Nextclinics International group, which specializes in offering fertility solutions and other medical services. We incorporate his expertise in supporting the strategic growth of technology start-ups and biomedical diagnostics into our development plans.

RNDr. PhDr. Zdeněk Hostomský, CSc

Zdeněk Hostomský studied biochemistry at the Faculty of Science and History of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University. He then worked at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, where he was involved in genetic engineering and where he also received his Candidate of Sciences degree in 1983. In 1985, he went to the USA for a one-year internship at the California Institute of Technology, and in 1987 he immigrated to the USA with his family. He worked for Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Warner Lambert and finally for Pfizer, where he became CEO of the Cancer Research Center in 2000. From 2012-2022, he was Director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Czech Academy of Sciences. After his tenure, he has served as Deputy Director for International Relations and as an Honorary Chair. He is also the main coordinator of the National Institute for Virology and Bacteriology for the European project Exceles, which is part of the National Recovery Plan in the Czech Republic.

Prof. MUDr. Tomáš Zima, DrSc., MBA, dr. h. c. mult.

Tomáš Zima graduated in general medicine from the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in 1990. Since 1990 he worked at the Institute of Medical Chemistry at the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University where he was certified in internal medicine and obtained two specializations in nephrology and clinical biochemistry.  Tomáš Zima is a leading Czech physician, specializing in biochemistry, who served as Rector of Charles University from 2014 to 2022 and as Dean of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague from 2005 to 2012. Prof. Zima is a long-standing head of the Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics and the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University.

prof. RNDr. Michal Kozubek, Ph.D.

Michal Kozubek graduated in computer science at Masaryk University, where he served as Dean of the Faculty and was instrumental in the introduction of the new field of study, “Image Processing”. The Centre for Biomedical Image Analysis (CBIA), led by Professor Kozubek, collaborates with a number of commercial companies, including Telight, in the field of image data processing using artificial intelligence.
